What are the advantages of using paper belts over cloth belts?
Typically paper belts will give a better finish. For a wide belt machine the backing should be "E" or "F" weight. This is a heavy paper that has some flexibility. Paper belts must be handled carefully to avoid damaging the edges. This type of belt is less expensive than cloth, but will not supply the life expected from cloth.
Cloth belts for wide belt sanding are available in "X" or "Y" weight backing. The "Y" weight is a heavy material that can be polyester or a polyester / cotton blend. These products can be used for aggressive dimensioning of stock. In most cases an "X" weight back should be sufficient for normal sanding (80 grit and finer). Cloth belts are more expensive but can be justified by the longer life they provide.
In summary, the performance of the sanding belt compared to the cost will determine the value.
