What are the advantages or disadvantages of using PSA (Sticky Backed) Discs vs. Hook & Loop Discs?
Hook & Loop discs are ideal for smaller shops that tend to change grits often, and would like to be able to re-use a particular grit. In this situation, Hook & Loop is the only real alternative. Some claim that Hook & Loop discs run cooler as there is better airflow between the pad and the disc. This is a true statement, however, PSA discs can be combined with new innovative pads that have channels cut into them allowing for air flow comparable to hook & loop discs.
PSA (Pressure Sensitive Adhesive) discs cost less from most manufacturers and are still the preferred type of discs for most production shops. When sanding, especially flat surfaces, a harder platen is better to ensure a consistent scratch pattern. The backing pad acts as the platen. A Hook & Loop backing pad is softer than PSA pads due to the hook. Therefore, the discs do not finish as consistently and are less aggressive. The backing pads for PSA tend to have better longevity than Hook & Loop pads as the hook on the hook & loop pads wear quickly and the disc will no longer adhere.
