Join Chris and Sherry for a discussion of the available thicknesses and appropriate applications of Uneeda's latest foam abrasives line, Ekasilk Plus. Ekasilk Plus comes in 1/2 inch, 5mm and 10mm.
If you’re thinking about switching to a flocked back foam abrasive for finishing, choosing the right thickness for your application will be key to getting the results you are looking for.
Uneeda’s EKASILK PLUS line is available in 3 thicknesses: 5mm, 10mm, and ½ inch. The 5 and 10mm options offer both a closed cell foam structure which means it is firmer and better suited for sanding flat surfaces, yet still flexible enough to bend on rounded edges. The ½ inch sponge is made with an open cell foam structure. It is more flexible and less dense, and is able to match the shape of your work piece, whether a curved or contoured surface or profile, and deliver a smooth and uniform finish.
The difference between the 5 and 10 mm is that the 5 mm is great for sanding flat surfaces, whereas the 10mm is better suited for leveled surfaces, like shaker doors, where a sander would otherwise compromise the paint on the edges. On the other hand, if you need to sand in a tight space, such as between louvers for instance, using the 5mm sponge is a great option. The sponge can be slightly offset on a 3×4 sander, allowing you to sand those hard to reach areas faster and more evenly. Additionally, the 10 mm is the perfect option for sanding on a hanging line, as it absorbs the vibrations of the machine and is easier on your joints.
