When preparing to finish your woodworking projects, whether with stain or primer, you want to make sure to have the smoothest and most consistent scratch possible. Using foam abrasives products on your orbital sander is the best option to achieve a great finish by clearing up knife marks, swirl marks and other visual defects and inconsistencies from previous efforts.
This video features both the ½in. Ekasilk Plus sponges and Filmtek discs on an interface pad. Both options allow for careful sanding prior to applying stain or primer.
Our Filmtek abrasives are one of our most popular coated abrasives on the market today. The film backing offers a unique combination of flexibility and durability while coarser grits can be used as a leveling tool as well.
Our ½in. Ekasilk Plus foam abrasives offer an alternative way. These abrasive sponges were specifically designed to be used on orbital sanders such as our Ekansand sanders and come in standard sizes (3”x4”, 5” & 6”) as well as other custom sizes.
The featured ½in. version is made of an open-cell foam structure that allows for maximum flexibility. This configuration allows the sponge to match the exact shape of your contour as the grain will actually recede into the sponge. It is important to remember that these sponges were designed to be used as finishing tools, in between coats of paint or stain, and should not be used for heavy leveling applications. When using the coarser grades of EKASILK PLUS, make sure to maintain a light pressure on the sander or you may end up polishing the wood. These sponges are the perfect abrasives to remove light swirls marks and other defects to prepare for your finish.
